Coaching Helps a CEO Turn Around a Failing Business

Denise Harvey is a highly intelligent strategic thinker with deep knowledge of her industry. She respects good management and brought in smart and experienced leaders to carry out her innovative vision. But Denise is somewhat of a loner who expected her team members to be totally self-motivated. She was not inspiring the needed changes because they were working at cross-purposes.

Our coaching focused on

  1. reframing her attitude that emotions have no place in business ("adults shouldn't need approbation"),

  2. encouraging and rewarding teamwork, and

  3. modifying her style of debate (she debated to refine her ideas but others felt challenged to a mental duel).

Denise was better able to influence her team when she offered more participation in problem solving, showed appreciation for their ideas and feelings, clarified when she was exploring possibilities (vs. driving home a point of view), and developed an agreed-upon process for effective teamwork.

She and her revitalized team turned their business around.
