Coaching Helps a Client Refocus His Career

Mary,

I am very grateful to you for listening, reflecting my thoughts with eerie accuracy, and keeping me focused on doing rather than analyzing. A long time ago I read a series of books by David K. Reynolds on Morita therapy, a Japanese concept he brought to the West. Your approach to coaching reminds me of how he described this kind of therapy:

  • meaningful homework between visits,

  • a focus on doing rather than self-absorbed thinking, and

  • a targeted time in the near future when there's no more need for regular coaching.

It continually amazes me that two of the most important things we do – developing ourselves and raising our children -- receive little to no focus in our formal education. In fact, many are embarrassed to say they asked for help on either topic!

When I started looking for a new job a couple of months ago, I told several headhunters I was going to hire a coach, and most were impressed – they thought it was a great idea.

I have never tried to run a department solely on my own ideas, and that's a much less important venture than refocusing my career.
